Herbert Sherman, born in Philadelphia, Pa., was the son of Alfred and Mary Sherman. He enlisted in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard in 1940. He later was transferred to Co. A 176th Engineer Construction Battalion, part of the Texas Army National Guard. He served in the Aleutian Islands from June 29, 1942 until December 7, 1944. He returned to the U.S. and then served in Okinawa from August 12, 1945 until November 5, 1945. While still in the Aleutians, he started to correspond with Joyce Abramson. They were engaged in February of 1946 and married September 1, 1946. They had two sons, Jonathan Michael Sherman and Owen Ross Sherman.
