Jerry was in the army from September 1953 until 1955. He did his basic training in Fort Dix, New Jersey and then was sent to Fort Myer in Arlington, Virginia. There he worked in the Pentagon in the mail room until his discharge in 1955. In 1956, he married Bernice Klein and they lived in the Bronx for several years. The family, consisting of Jerry, Bernice and their three sons Marc, Bruce and Jeff, moved to Spring Valley, New York and then to Monsey, New York.

Jerry was active in the Jewish War Veterans Fred Hecht Post and was commander of that post for two years. He was also active as Chancellor Commander of the Ramapo Lodge Knights of Pythias. Both organizations were in Spring Valley.

In 1998, Jerry and Bernice retired to Emerald Pointe in Delray Beach, Florida. Again, Jerry was active in the community, serving on the Board of Directors and also on various committees in the development.

Jerry was diagnosed with cancer in 2010 and died on November 27, 2013 leaving behind his wife of 57 years, his three sons, three daughters (in law) and six grandchildren.
