Max was born on February 12, 1903 in Philadelphia, PA. He enlisted in the Marine Corps at 15 years of age by falsifying his date of birth as 1900. He got aways with it because he was big for his age. He served through the end of World War I and later he was promoted to Corporal. After the war, his unit was deployed to the Islands of the West Indies where the Marines were used to maintain order, put down insurrections, etc. He was discharged in 1922. In civilian life, he delivered milk for Belle Vernon in Cleveland, OH for 40 years. He married Lillian Markowitz and had one daughter, Shirley (Rosenthal) Guttenplan, 3 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. He joined Orange County Post 760 of the Jewish War Veterans. Max passed away in Orange County on May 25, 1992 at the age of 89.
